On Mara the fox's eleventh birthday, a rebellious teenage wolf takes Mara to a mysterious island where getting lost is as easy as falling into a patch of wild mushrooms. Mara soon finds herself alone and confused, with no idea how to get back home.

Will any of the cheeky local animals help Mara find her way? Will she make it through the impossible Cave of Many Doors? And could the island be trying to tell Mara something important… about herself? Sometimes, following your own path is trickier than it seems.

Join Mara on a magical journey of self-discovery in this beautifully illustrated modern fairy tale for all curious souls aged seven and up.

About Ké Kampeas-Rittenhouse

I write children's stories and make custom oracle cards using images from children's books to reveal the secrets of your inner sprite. I started Sun Portal Media to publish Mara and the Bad Wolf and other projects that bring fun and magic to the world. Previously, my writing has appeared in The Toast and cléo: a journal of film and feminism, where I was a senior editor.

Mara and the Bad Wolf is my first children's book, illustrated by Kamila Wojciechowicz-Krauze with book design by Bryony van der Merwe.

Writing this story allowed me to express the mystery and magic of my own experiences exploring fluidity and gender. I also wanted to encourage children to trust their understanding of themselves above all else, and to let them know that it's okay to feel and express difficult emotions.

This book was made possible through the generous support of so many people, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to the project.

In order to make the book accessible to everyone who wants to read it, I'm offering a free copy of the ebook when you sign up for my newsletter. (For those who can afford it, please also consider making a purchase from the website to support my work).
